Plot Synopsis[]
Jinghua recognises Duanmu Xi as he introduces himself. As he had no living relatives, Xi signed his death certificate at which point Jinghua registers that he is dead having been run over by a truck and is on another plane of existence in which Xi can see him.
Asking why he looks like he does now, Xi explains that sometimes a persons soul reflects the most important moment in their life, which for Jinghua was when he was in junior high. He thinks back remembering his parents, before being interrupted as Xi observes be can still daydream as a spirit, before he commands him to shut up.
Jinghua demands to know why he keeps saying that he is dead querying why he can still see his reflection in the mirror, ghosts are not supposed to be able to do that. This is why Xi has been waiting for him. He explains that generally when people die they lose all connections with the living world. In some cases they reflect their image on a reflective surface with the result that though Jinghua lacks a physical body he can still commune with the living. Such people usually possess high amounts of spiritual energy, Jinghua could see spirits whilst he was still alive for instance.
Laying out the situation, when people die they can only remain on earth for seven days. If Jinghua does not want to disappear he can choose to become Xi’s soul image. This involves signing a contract to assist him in his duties and can stay on earth so long as Xi is alive. Phrasing it as Jinghua would have to work for him, he soundly refuses. He is livid that he was treated as a kid when alive and would still have to listen to someone when dead. Punching the glass window in anger, he falls right through. Panicking Jinghua calls for help, saying he will die if he falls from this height. Xi tells him to calm down, he cannot die a second time.
He is thrilled to fly around in the air as Xi watches, before Jinghua has notions of cursing and having his revenge on the guy who killed him by scaring him. Xi silently thinks to himself the several phases people go through when they die: a sense of confusion, utter denial, before noting on a tablet that the target has entered the third phase being in a state of emotional distress.
With this brief meeting, Duanmu Xi feels as though his view on the world has been renewed but wonders if the deal he wanted to make might be more than he can handle.
